Tree63 - Sunday! Review
The Police. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Cream. There's something magical about the power trio. When it works, it's a wonderful thing. The names above are some of rock's biggest names. Well, add Tree63 to the list of trios that just work. This South African-bred band is one of Christian music's best "underappreciated" groups. Never mentioned in the same breath as bands such as Mercy Me and Newsboys, they still have undeniably great lyrics, luscious guitars, and a tight rhythm section.
The band's latest offering, Sunday! never disappoints. From the opening jangly-guitars on the title track, to the full-on attack of the finale, "The Revolution," this album is 39 minutes of pure enjoyment. This is undoubtedly their best album since their eponymous debut, and in many ways, surpasses it.
What long time fans of this group will notice is the writing just keeps getting better. Although a tad cliché at times (see the chorus on "Alright") there is a certain maturity to be found in a band that has been around for a decade. Credit producer Joe Baldridge for bringing that creativity out, and making it rock. No, this album isn't groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, but I dare you not to listen and be singing every word by the second listen.
